Artists who are facilitators

The very fact that the Visual Assembly is constructed of pre-made stencils is a key point. It was conceived in many ways as a testbed for a new role for artists: not as geniuses who produce new worlds in front of an astonished public, but as artists who are facilitators who implement the will of the Assembly. This step is a development of director and theater theorist Gordon Craig’s idea of a “super marinette.”
